I wish I dreamed

I mean I used to, but the past few years it barely happens anymore. Probably because I’ve gotten into the habit of going to bed only when exhaustively tired so that I just conk out until my alarm abruptly wakes me up the next morning (or afternoon).

Often times I forget what my dream is about immediately after waking up which is totally annoying, but normal seeing as it’s likely it wouldn’t have any coherence when analysed by a conscious mind. There are, however, a couple dreams I remember pretty vividly from when I was a wee lad to relatively more recently. They’re dreams that often recurred which is why I imagine my conscious self was able to hold onto to tidbits.

Sometimes they’re strangely short scenes that seem to last the entirety of a lengthy dream (if that makes any sense). For example, there was one where I’m walking through a light foresty trail loosely based on the trails near my home and I spot a bear off to the side in an open patch of grass. The bear stands up and I’m transfixed by it. It doesn’t move any more, but I’m pretty sure I’m in some sort of state of fear because I don’t want to move either. So we both just stand there. This isn’t to say I have some sort of Colbertian fear of bears. I love bears. I mean sure I wouldn’t go approach one in the forest, I’m not dumb. But bears are cool.

One time it happened where I was in a dream and awoke in sleep paralysis. It mostly involved being far beneath a dark ocean on a rocky sea floor. There’s nothing but the water around me and a enormous cliffside that reaches far off into the distance upward presumably breaching the waves somewhere at the top. I know for some reason or another that it is indeed the shore, but I can’t bring myself to swim upwards to get out. I keep moving forward as if being followed, but all is silent. I urge myself to wake up because I’d rather not be at the bottom of the ocean apparently I concede. So I’m in bed wide awake, but can’t move. Every time I close my eyes I return to the dream as if I had just paused it for a second. I forget if anything happened between just floating around and finally fully waking up with all my motor functions. It was kind of frightening and I’ve never had it happen since.

I once had a dream where I got up in the morning did the whole routine to go to school and then as I was leaving I woke up in my bed disappointed that I had to do it all over again.

I’m sure there are more recurring ones I can remember if I tried, but I don’t much feel like it now. Anyway dreams are cool and interesting and I’m sad I don’t get them anymore.
